Corruption across MENA Countries

Oumeyma Chelbi  -  May 5, 2024

Overall, high -income countries in MENA have maintained the greatest capacity to control corruption in the region. In fact, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been able to gradually improve their capacity to control corruption over the past two decades. In contract, while overall ability to control corruption in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman is high, it has declined over the past two decades as oil resources come under more pressure.  Outside of the GCC,  government control of corruption is perceived as much lower and has declined slightly or stagnated since the early 2000s overall. This is particularly true for conflict states. Here, Iraq is a bit of an outlier. Since the war, corruption has remained high, but the ability of the state to control it has improved over time.
